BlizzCon 2011 - Mists of Pandaria

Hi all

With the return of the blogging carnival over at Coldsgoldfactory todays topic offered me the chance to let my imagination run wild a little, the topic is

“If you could add 1 item or feature to the Mists of Pandaria expansion, what would it be and why?”

You can find all the previous carnival entries and this months from me and others over at coldsgoldfactory.

So after quite a bit of brainstorming and writing ideas down filling them out or working out how they could be introduced to World of Warcraft. One idea really stuck out to me and it is an idea I’ve seen or heard mentioned before as something people would like to see added to the game.

What would I like to see added in MoP

The thing I’d most like to see added to the game in Mists of Pandaria is new professions. When I was brainstorming ideas I constantly kept on coming back to one idea and that was to add a profession called either Woodworking or Carpentry.

As I was jotting down ideas for things it could make as a profession or how it could be used, I got to thinking how you would get the materials needed for this profession. The way I see it they are several options to this conundrum. One would be to add materials to a vender, this would have to have its cost balanced inline with other vendor bought items and require a lot of tinkering to keep the price of levelling it roughly equal to other professions.

The second idea would be to create a brand new gathering profession to go with it that would require you to gather wood from tree’s. This could be called something like Lumberjacking or Felling. To implement this Blizzard would need to add a new gathering animation and add small trees/stripling to already created wooded areas in-game. As a profession bonus they could add something like the Lifeblood proc to herbalism but make it use your primary stats ie Strength, Agility, Intellect. This would in effect act like a third trinket or a potion from an alchemist. The final option would be to add this to a profession already in-game and that would be herbalism, they would still have to add new trees/stripling but could keep the existing animations.

What Items could you Craft ?

At first glance I thought the items you could create would be fairly limited in scope. But after considering other professions and how they could interact it opens up a lot more options for items that you could craft. Here are just a few of the ideas I had,

> Weapon stocks (ie Gun handles, bows to go with Engineering)

> Clock work toys, Puzzle boxes (new companion pets)

> Canes, Walking sticks

> Frames

> Trinkets

> Chests, Care packages

Now to add most of these items it would require a little bit of tinkering of existing professions or vendor items but with a bit of imagination or work they would integrate quite well. For instance Gun stocks currently there are several types of stocks already in-game available from a vendor such as Walnut stock, and Heavy stock. You could take a base material like Walnut strip wood and combine it with a vendor bought item like glue or iron strapping to make a Walnut stock. This could be done at various levels with different types of wood and then sold to engineers who can use them to make their guns. The same could be done for bows so for instance ashen strip wood would combine to make an ashen bow, Or you could leave it so the Woodworker/Carpenter makes the Bow/Gun as well as engineers. Giving more choice and items for people to craft.

If we look at the idea for Canes or Walking sticks. This type of item would serve for wealthy bank alts or be used on RP realms. With the advent of transmogging I think cosmetic items like this could fill in a niche for people who like their characters to look good around town. You could creat various levels of Canes/Walking sticks using the different types of wood available so for instance Ashen, Oaken, Walnut, To give them all different looks, styles, or sparkle while keeping them uniform you could add a Jewelers setting or iron strapping then use different gems to add the different colours. So if we had them in cataclysm now you could perhaps have The Icy Oaken Cane with a tooltip that says ” As cool as Ice ” So its materials would be something like 50 oaken strips or 10 heavy oaken strips 3 Jewellers settings or Iron strapping and 3 Zephrytes. I’m sure the devs could come up with some witty tooltip remarks to go with the different jewels.

You could also make companion pets, these are something blizzard likes to add every major patch or so. Currently Enchanting and Engineering can make them aswell as the various vendors, achievements, and reputation gains you can buy them through or gain them from completing. They could add pets like a Clockwork Toy Soldier, Cuckoo Clock, Wind up Racer, Train. Theirs hundreds of toys available in real life that would fit in to the category of items Blizzard could use as Companion pets.

Of the other items I mentioned if they ever implemented player housing or communal/ guild space you could make frames that show off guild or personal Raid, PVP, Reputation, or profession achievements. Basically a way of showing off achievements to others. Chests or Care packages could work similar to the way Goblin Barbeques work now and grant enough food, flasks for a 10 or 25 man raid groups, giving another way of getting you food/stat buffs. You could expand these to include class buffs and have a 10 or 20 use limit, similar to runescrolls or the way drums used to work.

Lastly you have Trinkets, I imagine these to be similar to trinkets you can get with alchemy, engineers helms, Scribes darkmoon trinkets, so they’d be quite good for the first tier of a expansion, but rather than leave it at that I would allow Woodworker/ Carpenters to make something called an upgrade pack, you could add something similar for alchemy and engineering, and inscription so that the particular items crafted stay relevent through the various tiers of a expansion. You could make various trinkets that give you a bonus to stats like Dodge for tanks, or Attack power for hunters, druids, or haste, intellect for mages shamans etc.

Well those are just a few of the ideas I had, and there was a plenty more that could have been added to the list, but these where just a little flavor of how the professions could be expanded upon. I hope you all enjoyed the post and if you have any ideas you’d like to add put them in the comments. Let’s see what other ideas people like.

I really like this idea. A couple of other items that could fall within this domain:
    – Staves: It always seemed odd to me that blacksmiths would be making a staff that is often times wooden.
    – Tent, cabin or portable inn: I have always found it a pain when leveling a new toon to have to fly back to an inn when your hearth isn’t up and you are done for the night in order to get your rested xp. It would be sweet if you could buy some sort of portable rest area so that you could ‘make camp’ in the wilderness to still get your rested xp without having to go back to town for an inn. This could be an one time use item or something with a long CD.
    – Wooden decoys or fishing lures: A new/special fishing lure that would make fish bite sooner in the fishing process.
    – Totems: This is out there a bit but give them the ability to change the look/shine/sheen on totems. (or change the look of a druid’s treants).
    – Clogs: The game just needs more wooden clogs darn it! lol.
    – Cooking spoon or utensils to give a higher chance of leveling up cooking or just making the cooking process faster (without new toons doing the 100 daily grind in Dalaran for the chef’s hat)
    – A special shovel for speeding up archeology digs.

      Hi Tom

There’s some really good ideas there. I wonder if Blizzard would ever be open to suggestions. I’m sure as a community the fans could suggest some fantastic ideas.
